Across India, SSMF has delivered lasting change in sanitation, healthcare hygiene, skills, and menstrual health. Explore the stories behind our work.
Advancing Menstrual Health and Women’s Empowerment

Menstrual hygiene is not only a health issue, it is a matter of dignity, equality, and opportunity. SSMF works to improve menstrual health awareness while creating livelihood opportunities for women through community-led sanitary pad production units.
Operating across states including Haryana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, the programme trains women and Self-Help Group (SHG) members in the production of affordable sanitary pads. These products are distributed through awareness campaigns, adolescent girls’ meetings, and community outreach programmes.
The initiative promotes both menstrual health awareness and economic empowerment, enabling women to become agents of change within their communities.
Through these efforts, SSMF is helping women lead healthier, more confident, and financially independent lives.
Empowering Communities Through Skills

SSMF’s Skill Development Centre in Mewat, Haryana, empowers women, youth, and marginalized communities through vocational training and livelihood enhancement programmes.
Participants receive hands-on training in income-generating trades such as tailoring, rug-making from recycled materials, eco-friendly plate manufacturing, and handicrafts. The programme also includes entrepreneurship guidance, soft skills development, and career counselling to improve employability and self-reliance.
By equipping individuals with practical skills and market-linked opportunities, SSMF is helping families build sustainable livelihoods and achieve greater economic independence.

Excellence in Healthcare Sanitation

SSMF has been at the forefront of delivering professional sanitation and hygiene management to hospitals, government institutions, schools, and public sector organizations for over a decade.
A notable achievement was its contribution to the success of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS), New Delhi, which secured Second Position in the All India Kayakalp Assessment 2023-24, a prestigious Ministry of Health & Family Welfare initiative recognizing excellence in hospital cleanliness and sanitation.
SSMF’s dedicated sanitation workforce played a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness that contributed to this national recognition. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SSMF personnel continued to serve on the frontlines, ensuring safe and hygienic environments in hospitals and COVID care centres while supporting public health efforts during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.
Building Dignified and Accessible Sanitation for All

Access to safe and hygienic sanitation is fundamental to public health and human dignity. Through its sanitation initiatives, Sulabh Sanitation Mission Foundation (SSMF) has helped bridge critical gaps in urban and community sanitation infrastructure across India.
Over the years, SSMF has constructed and upgraded public toilets, school toilets, and household sanitation facilities, ensuring access to clean, safe, and inclusive sanitation for women, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. These facilities have significantly improved hygiene standards, reduced open defecation, and enhanced the quality of life for thousands of people.
By creating sustainable sanitation infrastructure, SSMF continues to contribute to healthier communities and the vision of a cleaner India.
