Who We Are
Sulabh Sanitation Mission Foundation (SSMF) was established in 2006
with the mission to advance sustainable sanitation by integrating WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives with education, women’s economic empowerment, and health and nutrition programs.
Since 2014, SSMF has played an important role in supporting the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, contributing to the nationwide effort to eliminate open defecation. The foundation is also actively involved in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through grassroots interventions and behaviour change strategies.
Headquartered in New Delhi and working across India, SSMF adopts a participatory, community-led approach to sanitation. Using sanitation as an entry point, it raises awareness about the health risks of open defecation and encourages the construction and consistent use of toilets. Its comprehensive WASH programs place special emphasis on menstrual hygiene management, including the distribution of sanitary napkins, training in their use, and the promotion of hand hygiene.
WHAT WE DO

Beyond sanitation, SSMF works at the intersection of gender and development—advancing women’s economic empowerment through skill development and livelihood initiatives aimed at fostering financial independence and strengthening community resilience
The foundation has also spearheaded holistic village development initiatives, enabling several communities to be recognised as model villages, demonstrating the power of integrated and inclusive rural progress
Our Commitment
SSMF holds Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) since 2017
We are driven by a belief that dignity begins with sanitation. Our programs create agency and resilience in underserved communities, ensuring no one is left behind
